Listen to the Athletes
As I write this, NBA players are making history. Following the Milwaukee Bucks players’ decision to boycott their playoff game tonight following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, the NBA postponed all three of tonight’s games. Four years to the day from the first time Colin Kaepernick first took a knee, NBA players are the clear leaders when it comes to social justice activism in the sports world (and perhaps beyond). They have fully recognized the power of their voices, and they are using them in an effort to bring about real change in society.
To the executives in sports — the commissioners, team owners and presidents, sponsors and TV partners — I know you’re sitting in meetings right now, contemplating how you’re going to react and respond. I’ve been in these meetings. I understand your priority is to have the games be played and enjoyed by as many fans as possible. You want to get back to sports. But before you speak, let me offer a bit of advice. Listen. Really, actually listen to the athletes as they explain why they’re doing what they’re doing. And then support them. Use YOUR platforms to help them bring about change.
The players have found their voice. Any effort by you to silence them will land you on the wrong side of history.
